The books or the music in which we thought the beauty was locatedwill betray us if we trust to them; it was not in them, it only came through them, and what came through them was longing. These things–the beauty, the memory of our own past–are good images of what wereally desire; but if they are mistaken for the thing itself they turn into dumb idols, breaking the hearts of their worshippers. For they are not the thing itself; they are only the scent of a flower we have not found, the echo of a tune we have not heard, news from a country we have never yet visited. C.s. Lewis
About This Quote

I have heard this quote before and it is really beautiful. It’s the reason why I am an avid reader. When you read a book you love you get transported back to another time and place, feeling the joy of the characters. This quote reminds me how valuable our lives are.

We live once and die but our experiences shape us into the persons that we are today. It is impossible to go through life without making mistakes, losing loved ones, making bad decisions, etc. However, the beauty is that we get another chance at life, to right all of these wrongs and make amends for them.

The pleasure of reading a book comes from the understanding that while doing so we are allowing ourselves to feel something for someone other than ourselves.
